Dental Sealants: Extra Protection for Growing Smiles

Even with regular brushing and flossing, the deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of molars can be difficult to keep clean. Dental sealants are a safe, thin, protective coating that is applied to these teeth to help prevent cavities.

Dental Sealants — We can apply a plastic coating that prevents cavities by sealing the little grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, known as "pits and fissures." These little crevices become the perfect environments for decay-causing bacteria. Immature tooth enamel is more permeable and less resistant to tooth decay. Dental sealants are easy to apply and provide years of protection (Watch Dental Sealant Video).

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants act as a barrier, sealing out food particles and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. They are clear or tooth-colored and are virtually invisible once placed.

When Are Sealants Recommended?

Sealants are typically placed soon after the permanent molars erupt, when they are most susceptible to cavities:

  • First permanent molars: around ages 6-8
  • Second permanent molars: around ages 12-14

Some children may also benefit from sealants on premolars or baby teeth if they have deep grooves or are at higher risk for cavities.

How Are Sealants Placed?

Applying sealants is quick and comfortable and requires no drilling or numbing.

  1. The tooth is cleaned and dried.
  2. A special solution is applied to prepare the tooth surface.
  3. The sealant material is painted onto the grooves of the tooth.
  4. A curing light hardens the sealant, creating a protective shield.

The entire process takes just a few minutes per tooth.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can protect teeth for many years and are checked at each regular dental visit. If a sealant becomes worn or chipped, it can usually be repaired or replaced easily.

Why Choose Sealants?

Dental sealants are one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities in children and teens. Studies show they can reduce the risk of decay in molars by up to 70%. Combined with regular brushing, flossing, fluoride, and routine dental visits, sealants help keep smiles healthy and cavity-free.

At Dentistry for Children & Adolescents, our pediatric dentists carefully evaluate each child's teeth and recommend sealants when they will provide the greatest benefit. Preventing cavities before they start is one of the best ways to support a lifetime of healthy smiles.
