Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved topical solution that effectively treats and prevents dental caries while reducing tooth sensitivity. This noninvasive treatment contains two key ingredients: silver, an antimicrobial that kills bacteria and prevents new biofilm formation, and fluoride, a crucial element that helps protect the tooth structure from further demineralization (softening).

SDF is a highly effective and practical alternative to traditional fillings for managing tooth decay. It not only halts the progression of decay but also maintains the tooth's health until it naturally falls out or your child is ready for restorative treatment.

Process:

  • Carious teeth are isolated, kept dry, and cleaned of excess debris.
  •  A small brush is dipped in SDF and applied to the lesions for two minutes.
  • Any decayed areas will stain black, while healthy tooth structure remains unstained.
  • Excess SDF is wiped away, and fluoride varnish is applied.

SDF is particularly recommended in the following situations:

  • Children with severe early childhood caries
  • Young children who have difficulty remaining still for treatment
  • Patients with special needs
  • Children with carious lesions requiring multiple visits for treatment

Pros of SDF:

  • Quick, easy, and painless application
  • Provides immediate relief from tooth hypersensitivity
  • Kills bacteria responsible for cavities
  • Delays the need for more invasive treatments
  • Hardens softened dentin, enhancing resistance to acid and abrasion

Cons of SDF:

  • Permanently stains cavities black
  • Cavities that trap food may still require restorative work
  • Not suitable for deep cavities
  • About 20% of treated cavities may continue to progress
  • SDF is a treatment, not a cure, for cavities

IMPORTANT:
This treatment will only be effective with proper diet and daily brushing and flossing.
